Dead of Night – William Todd

dead of night

Thank you to the author of this book for providing me with a copy in return for an honest review.

Dead of Night are a series of 6 short stories with a dark theme that is pointed out by the title – death.

The stories all ranged in length which was nice.
The characters to me were a little one dimensional and hard to bond with, but I understand why. If the author went into detail with them I think that they would be so complex that you’d have 6 novellas rather than 6 short stories as the author intended.

I enjoyed reading the stories. If you asked me if they were scary I wouldn’t be able to tell you. I have no soul when it comes to horror and gore…you’re currently reading the person who sat through the Saw series, Hostel series and human centipede films without even batting an eyelid… a sign of psychopathy? Very likely…Anyway. These stories had so many twists and turns I wasn’t sure what to expect at all in any story.

My favorite story was the one about Jack….I’ve always had a weird infatuation with serial killers, especially unsolved ones like Jack the Ripper. The twist that was put into this story was fantastic.

At some point I did find myself a bit distracted, likely because I wasn’t getting that connection with the characters and didn’t really care if they died or not. The author does have a great way of imagery though. I think if some of my squeemish friends read this then they’d be freaked out by the mysteriousness and spookiness. Which is likely exactly what I think he’s aiming for.

Casting Corner

As there were so many characters in this book I have not thought of casting them all. Instead I have decided who I would love to direct this film…

Tim Burton

Best-tim-burton-movies

Other than splitting up with my idol (Helena Bonham Carter), I love Tim Burton and his work. When I started reading In The Dead Of Night Tim’s work was the first that came into my mind. I think that Todd’s stories mixed with Burton’s direction would make some really thought provoking and brilliantly paranormal films.
